Mothers are Amazing (Anonymous)

I have no photo to submit and I don’t have any children of my own as of yet, but I just wanted to say that I think that motherhood is one of the most amazing things that a woman’s body can do. It is horrific that society has made “beauty” so important that anyone who can’t live up to those standards is made to feel so shamed and ugly. I am a firm believer in women’s rights and that women should have careers, however the true “purpose” of our bodies is to make babies and feed them. It is the most incredible and beautiful miracle that I know of. Our bodies are able to give life to a new person and feed that person from ourselves. It is too bad that our culture lost the veneration of childbirth and mother hood that so many of the ancient cultures practiced. Every woman who has labored to bring a new life into this world should see her self as the truly wonderous miracle that she is and her body as the amazing vehicle that allows the human race to continue. I think you are all the most beautiful and strong women I have ever seen.

I agree. I think that society has definately taken what is natural and beautiful and tried to make us feel ashamed about it. I have always struggled to love my body. Since I have had my son, and my body is more different than ever, I have learned to love my body and see the beauty that is there. thank you.

I don’t even have any plans to have children, and yet I find this site so powerful and inspiring. You are all beautiful.

I agree, it is sad that there are so few standards of beauty for us to subscribe to. I really do believe it contributes to the depression in our society. Basically, there are only a couple of acceptable ‘molds’ out there (rich, successful….or beautiful, youthful) and if you fit niether than you are considered a loser.

I would take issue, however, with the comment that our main ‘purpose’ in life is to create babies. I think it’s an OPTION….and a wonderful option if it’s what you choose. But women who do not have children (either by choice or biology) should not be made to feel ‘less than’ mothers either!

    ALL women are wonderful.

I took her to mean that it was the main purpose of our BODIES to create children – not the main choice of our minds. ;)
