22 months postpartum. Still trying to find my old body. (Anonymous)

I gave birth to my beautiful daughter on May 3rd 2006. She weighed 7 pounds 1.2oz and was amazing. I gained 51 pounds while pregnant and gave birth 10 days before my due date. I’m now about 135 pounds (5 pounds under pre-pregnancy weight) but I do not feel/look it! I’ve always struggled with body image disorder. While my husband says I look great (so does everyone else) I cannot seem to think that. There are days when I think I look great, then there are other days when I feel so gross…Its horrible. I need to learn to love my body, I love it because it held my child for 9 months, but I hate it because its not the same. I’ll get there someday! I’ve added a few pictures, the first two are me 22 months post partum, and the last one is my beautiful daughter.

Wow you look awesome!!! I’m sorry to hear that you think you look so awful. It’s a lie, you know. A huge lie that you keep telling yourself. I have a feeling that even if you were forty pounds lighter and anorexically thin, you would think there were still pounds to lose or something else was wrong. You look gorgeous! You have a beautiful flat tummy and beautiful red hair… but I bet there is something there that photos cannot tell us. There’s a reason why people love you and it’s not because of the way you look. I bet you are intelligent and creative and loving and you have something to talk about. That’s why people love you. Not because of the way you look.

Your daughter, is beautiful, too! She obviously got her beautiful looks from her mommy! Remember that the sooner you start telling yourself you are beautiful, the sooner your daughter will believe that SHE is beautiful. To you, you are the most beautiful person alive. When she hears you say you are “fat” or “ugly” or “disgusting” and then you try to tell her she is beautiful, she will believe that you are lying to her subconsciously and that she is really ugly. Start telling yourself the truth so she will believe the truth about herself. Tell yourself how beautiful you think you are in her earshot so she knows you believe you are beautiful so she will believe the same thing about herself.

Excuse me … I’m sorry … but what exactly is it that you think is wrong with your body? A few stretch marks? A tiny extra weight around the mid-drift? BIG DEAL! I’m 3 wks from delivery and hope to look as good as you at some stage afterwards. Really, I wouldn’t say it if I didn’t mean it (I am very vein and can be judgemental at times). You look really good. You should be smiling from ear to ear about how you look after having a baby as far as I can tell!
